Skye and Lochalsh: Adult Iceland Gull in Broadford Bay at the river mouth today (Neil Bennett).

Lochaber: Four Juvenile Iceland Gulls, first-winter Glaucous Gull and the Viking Gull at Mallaig, possibly another Glaucous Gull at Morar. 11 Slavonian Grebes and 4 Red-throated Divers at Loch nan Ceall.  Three Jays at Arisaig (All Bob McMillan). Kingfisher at Fort William.

Sutherland: First-winter Glaucous Gull at Balnakeil beach this afternoon (Peter Stronach).

Easter Ross: Arctic Skua flew southwest into Dornoch Firth at Tarbat Ness (Dave Tanner). 

Inverness-shire: Adult Mediterranean Gull at Alturlie Bay sewage works at NH711476 (James Gordon). Still 47 Black-tailed Godwits feeding at Lentran (Lynden Schofield). 2 Great Crested Grebe, 40+ Long-tailed Duck, 96 Scaup at Alturlie point today (Alan MacAskill).

Easter Ross: Todd’s Canada Goose present again this morning 0915am at Brucefield Farm, Tarbat Ness - NH934857 in the stubble field immediately to the south of the entrance road with 150 Pink-footed Geese (Dave Tanner).

Badenoch and Strathspey: Great Grey Shrike in Grantown in a garden, close to the golf course at approximately NJ034275 (Sue Sykes) at 1045am. No sign in the afternoon, despite a thorough search of the golf course and clearing in Anagach Wood.

November 22nd

Wester Ross:
Loch Kishorn had 300 Black-headed Gulls and good numbers of other large gulls also Applecross Bay had 300 Common Gulls.  3 Slavonian Grebes in Applecross Bay; 20 Great Northern Diver between Applecross Bay and Sand.  4 Black-throated Diver at Sand (All Bob McMillan).

Badenoch and Strathspey: Pochard on Loch Insh still (Dave Pierce). Kingfisher at Milton Loch, Boat of Garten today.

Easter Ross:
Drake American Wigeon plus a good candidate for a female American Wigeon at Udale Bay today, also a Kingfisher and 450 Scaup (Mark Finn).

Inverness-shire: American Wigeon at Merkinch at 1130am (P, Insole). Black-tailed Godwit in flooded field at south end of Ardersier (Marcus Conway).

Lochaber: 2 juvenile Iceland Gulls still at Lochailort at fish farm (Stephen MacDonald).

Badenoch and Strathspey: Jack Snipe at Kerrow (Dave Pierce).

November 20th

Inverness-shire: Great Crested Grebe and 89 Scaup at Alturlie today (Roy Dennis). Drake King Eider still at Whiteness Head also 6 Pale-bellied Brent geese in Whiteness Bay (Jon Clarke).

Lochaber: Adult Iceland Gull on Rum at Kilmory (Sean Morris).

Ring-necked Duck at Loch Shiel had been present since 10am on 18th November (Andrew Dacre).

Lochaber:
Drake Ring-necked Duck back on Loch Shiel at midday, viewable from pier at Ardshealach at  NM684678 (Peter Stronach).  Two Iceland Gulls at the fish farm at Lochailort (Stehen MacDonald). Fifth-winter Viking Gull back at Mallaig harbour this afternoon (Peter Stronach).

Easter Ross: Drake American Wigeon still on Loch Eye this morning, also 87 Coot, 6 Pochard and 45 Scaup (Bob Swann). Drake American Wigeon at Udale Bay this morning, also 107 Shelduck and 27 Ringed Plover (Mary Galloway).

Skye and Lochalsh: Two Chiffchaffs at Lower Milovaig today (AS).

Inverness-shire: 1 Kingfisher and a single Purple Sandpiper feeding with Dunlin (Colin Leslie).

The fifth-winter Viking Gull returns to Mallaig, now looking virtually identical to an adult Glaucous Gull!

Easter Ross: Drake American Wigeon at Udale Bay at 11am (David McAllister/Tain and District Field Club). 400 Scaup at Udale Bay (Lynda Graham).

Lochaber: 60 Greenland White-fronted Geese at Dalnabreack, Loch Shiel (Peter Dale).

A Guillemot was shot for food on the 26th October 2017 on the Faroes, it was ringed as a chick on Canna two years ago. This is the 70th Guillemot to be shot on the Faroes that has been ringed on Canna.

Inverness-shire: Drake King Eider back at Whiteness Head today (video here), also Spotted Redshank still in the bay (note this is definitely a different individual to the Tain bird earlier in the autumn as it is unringed) and 11 Pale-bellied Brents. 17 Pale-bellied Brents at Fort George (All Jon Clarke). Adult Mediterranean Gull in Alturlie bay at midday (Mike Crutch). Drake American Wigeon still at Clachnaharry (A Grady).

Easter Ross: Two immature White-tailed Sea Eagles flew from Dornoch Point to Morrich More (Dean MacAskill). Greenland White-fronted Goose and 6 Barnacle Geese with Pink-footed Geese and a Little Egret at Udale Bay today (John Picton).

Wester Ross: 1 Slavonian Grebe at Dundonnel, 10 Barnacle Geese at Mungasdale (Andy Williams). 

Skye and Lochalsh: Iceland Gull still at Bayfield, Portree.  Chiffchaff at Lower Milovaig and a Long-tailed Duck head of Loch Ainort (Bob McMillan).

Lochaber: Glaucous Gull again at Galmisdale Bay, Eigg.​

Skye and Lochalsh:
There was a strong northerly gale down the Minch pushing birds into Loch Portree and Broadford Bay. 2 juvenile Sabine's Gulls in Broadford Bay late morning (Martin Benson). 19 Long-tailed Duck flew north in the Sound of Raasay, seen from Black Rock, Portree, also 2000 Common Gulls in Loch Portree (Neil Bennett).

Inverness-shire: 83 Black-tailed Godwits feeding in the mud as the tide fell at Lentran Pt this morning (Lynden Schofield). 35 Snow Buntings on the shingle spit at Whiteness Head this morning (Colin Leslie). 2 Little Auks west passed Whiteness Head this afternoon, but no sign of the King Eider today (Tom Wells).

Easter Ross: Adult Pomarine Skua north past Tarbat Ness this morning (Mike Hoit).


A Greylag (Orange Collar NAJ) seen yesterday on Carr Road, Carrbridge was ringed as an adult in July of this year in Blönduós, in northwest Iceland. It was in a flock of 1409 Greylags, which are presumed to be those that roost at Loch Garten overnight. Thanks to the Highland Ringing Group for info on this bird.

November 11th

Easter Ross:
Drake American Wigeon still at Loch Eye today at 4pm, also 53 Scaup and 8 Barnacle Geese with the Pink-footed Geese and Greylags. No sign of the Todd's Canada Goose at Tarbat Ness today. At North Cadboll/Lower Balaldie,  18 Barnacle Geese with 665 Pink-footed Geese and 835 Greylags. At Petley Farm, southwest of Portmahomack, 467 Whooper Swans, with at least 119 juveniles. At Inver, 14 Pale-bellied Brent Geese (including 7 juveniles, and a colour-ringed adult (All Mike Hoit/Keith Langdon).

Badenoch and Strathspey: Kingfisher singing 1km downstream of Boat of Garten with 120 Siskins nearby. 100 Siskins at Broomhill Bridge (Pete Gordon). 2 Barnacle Geese, a hybrid Greylag x Canada Goose, 129 Pink-footed Geese and an orange neck collared Greylag "NAJ" with 1409 Greylag Geese (Peter Stronach/Steve Broyd).

Inverness-shire: A covey of 12 Grey Partridges at Fort George, may be released birds (Colin Leslie).

November 10th

Easter Ross:
Todd's Canada Goose relocated to Tarbat Ness this morning, at NH9408786207 with 500 Pink-footed Geese and 7 Barnacle Geese (Dave Tanner).

Skye and Lochalsh: On the ferry crossing from Uig to Lochmaddy today, at Loch Snizort mouth/Waternish Point Skye:  c12 Little Auks, 2 Sooty Shearwaters, 2 Pomarine (ad and juv) and 1 Arctic (ad) Skuas and a 1st w Little Gull. Also  c100 Gannets, 500 Kittiwakes & 3-400/Guillemots/Razorbills in the area and 3 Little Auks with small numbers of Kittiwakes, Gannets and auks mid-crossing (Andrew Stevenson).​

Late news of a Todd's Canada Goose in Badenoch and Strathspey between Pityoulish and Guislich Farm on the 27th November 1999!!! (Dave Pullan), see amazing field sketch below.

If anybody else has historic records of potentially Category A Canada Geese or Cackling Geese from Highland, please submit them to the Highland recorder at [email protected]. Any records would obviously need to be accompanied by sketches/notes taken in the field at the time and/or good photographs.

Easter Ross: A Kingfisher is still in Dingwall, it was briefly perched on a post in the boating pond in Peffery Park this morning before flying off to the river (Keith and Rosie Barnes).

Badenoch and Strathspey: Immature Ring Ouzel in Nethybridge between Mountview and Nethy Hotels today (Mark Warren).

Todd's Canada Goose relocated in fields by the A9 north of Kildary at NH785761, also 2 Greenland White-fronted Geese and 82 Barnacle Geese. Drake American Wigeon still at Loch Eye, please view only from north side (All Bob Swann). Small flock of Bramblings (20+) in the beeches at Nether Kinellan, Stathpeffer this morning, also male Blackcap in garden at Craigdarroch Drive, Contin (Keith and Rosie Barnes).

Badenoch and Strathspey: 14 Waxwings circling over the top station on Cairngorm Mountain in a snow shower at 1250pm (Ian Ford).

Wester Ross: Single Black-throated Diver and the Velvet Scoter still present at Ardmair (Andy Williams). There was 2 Bramblings at Auchindrean this afternoon, also 9 Whooper Swan over Loch Broom (Tessa Rhodes).

Drake American Wigeon still on Loch Eye on the south side, and a Todd's Canada Goose with the Pink-footed Geese there too. Also 9 Pochard, 40 Scaup, 35 Barnacle Geese and 67 Coot (Bob Swann). At Dale Bay at 3pm, Little Egret again and 8000 Pink-footed Geese, 2 Greylags and 6 Barnacle Geese.

Lochaber: Yellow Wagtail
at Kilmory on Rum today, feeding amongst the deer! (Sean Morris). Kingfisher on the River Morar again today. Chiffchaff still at Kildonan on Eigg (John Chester).

Skye and Lochalsh: Chiffchaff at Drumfearn, Skye (Phil Knott).

Easter Ross: At low tide this afternoon at Udale Bay amongst 6000 Pink-footed Geese, one Greenland White-fronted goose and 38 Barnacle Geese (Kevin Davis).

Wester Ross: At Loch Ewe 9 Black-throated Diver and a Slavonian Grebe at Ormiscaig. 
Slavonian Grebe at Aultbea. In Gruinard Bay, at least 23 Great Northern Diver, 1 Black-throated Diver and 15 Common Scoter. At Dundonnel,  2 Slavonian Grebe, no sing of Ring-billed Gull (All Andy Williams).
